Before I started the lesson at hand I gathered my students on the carpet around me, I pulled out a hand mirror and just started staring at myself, smiling. Finally, a student asked why I was doing that. I set down the mirror, and said, “I’m looking at my dimple because I absolutely love it! ” At that point I said, “I think my dimple is definitely the best part of me" Then I took the mirror and passed it along, I told my students they would look into the mirror say "I love myself, and the best part of me is".... believe it or not it wasn't as easy as it sounds, after a few cheers my students felt confident enough to keep going. Once we were done, we then read the book "The Best Part of Me" to the fifth grade students. The book is written by children who describe their favorite body parts. I have my kids pick their favorite part of their bodies and write a descriptive poem or paragraph. I allowed the students to have leeway with their writing because it is about them. We then took black and white photos of the students favorite part of themselves. We decided to make a bulletin board out of it in the hallway near the guidance office. This is one of my all time favorite lessons!
